A good name not only helps to create an emotional connection with the character, it gives the audience a greater insight into the meaning of the character's relationship with his world. And even in the case of not giving a character a name, such as Cat, this decision still acts to tell us something important about the protagonist.

It's insulting when people assume that all writers' projects are direct formulations of their experiences. Writers have an imagination and they have the creative ability to flex it.

Write what you know is too vague. Write what we all know - sex, violence, death, jealousy, lies. Couldn’t care less where it’s set.
